Back to the Blog: A Slow Return to Writing, Creativity & Island Life.
Hello, lovely readers!
Guess who’s back? 🎉 After a seven-month(ish) hiatus, I’m thrilled to reconnect with all of you here on Our Little Hebrides. Life threw a few curveballs our way, but like the resilient island tides, I’ve returned, more inspired than ever.
The Unexpected Intermission
Last year was a rollercoaster. Following my autism diagnosis, among other life events, I began experiencing stress and anxiety-induced symptoms: heart palpitations, tingling in my hands and feet, dizziness, fainting spells, relentless tinnitus and TMJD. These physical manifestations of anxiety are not uncommon in autistic individuals, as heightened stress levels can lead to such symptoms.
While awaiting a neurology appointment, a process that can involve significant waiting times and on the advice of my GP, I sought chiropractic care in December. This approach has provided much-needed relief from some of my symptoms, particularly those related to TMJD, tinnitus, and kyphosis that I’ve had since childhood. Interestingly, kyphosis is seen in many autistic individuals, often due to reduced strength, decreased biomechanical stability, or sensory impairments.
This journey over these past few months has underscored the importance of self-care, nutrition and truly listening to my body.
A Fresh Perspective
Over the weekend, between swimming and beach visits with our wee one, we embarked on a mini home transformation. We relocated our desk/home office/studio area to a more scenic and inspiring spot. This included decluttering, and we ended up with three hefty bags of items ready for charity, as well as some things for the recycling centre. For a family aiming to live intentionally and embrace a “less is more” philosophy, the amount of stuff we had accumulated was quite a surprise - I mean my partner had accumulated around 30 pairs of socks; who needs that many socks!?!
It was exhausting but super rewarding. This refresh has reignited my passion for writing, photography, sketching, and sharing our island journey. My partner, a head waiter by day and musician at heart, also plans to focus on his musical endeavors at this spot this year too.
What’s Next?
I’m eager to dive back into sharing stories of our island adventures, the beauty of slow living as a family, and the lessons we learn along the way. I’m also excited to share insights into autism as well as our home education experiences, as we navigate learning in harmony with nature and curiosity. Thank you for your extraordinary patience and unwavering support during my absence. Here’s to new beginnings and the continued journey of embracing life’s simple pleasures.
With warmth and gratitude, from a scenic spot in the Hebrides:
